FC Liège and Standard to Start Season Away Due to Local Events
There is some insight into the start of the Challenger Pro League season, just before the schedule is announced. It will take place on the weekend of August 16-18, and clubs from Liège are unlikely to play at home during that weekend.
The Jupiler Pro League will kick off on the weekend of July 26-28, as one of the earliest European leagues to begin. The schedule will be revealed on Tuesday, two weeks after the end of Euro 2024. However, fans will have to wait a bit longer for the Challenger Pro League to start. The D1B championship will begin on the weekend of August 16-18, three weeks after the Jupiler Pro League.
It is highly likely that no club from Liège will play at home during that weekend, at least at the professional level. RFC Liège will start their season away, and Standard will be playing away for the 4th matchday of the JPL. This is due to two events: the traditional celebrations of August 15th in the Liège region, and the passage of the women’s Tour de France in the city.
The combination of these two events will likely result in limited police presence available for the organization of Pro League matches.
