The Montenegrin national team is mourning the sudden death of their 26-year-old goalkeeper, Matija Sarkic. Sarkic, who had 9 caps for his country, had just finished a gathering with the team after failing to qualify for Euro 2024. He even started in the match against Belgium on June 5th, making 8 saves in a 0-2 loss.

Reports suggest that Sarkic started feeling unwell at his apartment in Budva, Montenegro. Despite the arrival of emergency services and support from friends, he passed away around 6:30 on Saturday morning. The cause of death is still unknown.

His club, Millwall, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic news. Sarkic, who previously served as a backup goalkeeper for Aston Villa and Stoke City, had established himself as the first-choice keeper at Millwall since joining the team in August. He appeared in 33 matches for the English club, which finished 13th in the Championship this season.

In a statement, Millwall Football Club stated, “The Millwall Football Club is completely devastated to announce that Matija Sarkic has passed away at the age of 26. Everyone at the club sends their love and condolences to Matija’s family and friends during this extremely sad time. The club will not be making any further comments at this time and asks for the privacy of Matija’s family to be respected.”

The sudden and unexpected loss of such a young and promising talent has left the football community in shock. Sarkic’s teammates, fans, and the entire football world are mourning the tragic passing of a talented goalkeeper taken too soon. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.
