The E40 Road Closure for the Installation of New Signage
The Agency for Roads and Traffic will be installing four new gantries with a total of 16 RSS signs on the E40 towards Brussels on the nights of Monday, June 17 to Tuesday, June 18 and Tuesday, June 18 to Wednesday, June 19. During the works, the E40 will be completely closed at night from just before the Sterrebeek exit to the interchange of the E40 with the Brussels ring road (R0) in Sint-Stevens-Woluwe. Significant disruption is expected in the direction of Brussels, including from our region.
The four gantries with lane signage will be installed over two evenings/nights:
– On June 17, traffic near Sterrebeek will be reduced to one lane from 9 pm. At 12:30 am, the highway will be completely closed, and traffic will be diverted. The highway will reopen at 5 am on June 18.
– On June 18, the highway will close again at 9 pm until 5 am on June 19. The diversion from the previous evening will be in effect at 9 pm.
The Traffic Center anticipates significant disruption due to the closure and diversions. Therefore, it is recommended to avoid the Sterrebeek area during both evenings/nights. Drivers who must use the E40 towards Brussels are advised to follow the detours below.
Detour via Leuvensesteenweg (N2) and Woluwelaan (R22):
Once the highway is completely closed, all drivers on the E40 towards Brussels will have to exit the highway via the Sterrebeek exit and be redirected via Mechelsesteenweg (N227) and Leuvensesteenweg (N2) to Woluwelaan (R22). The diversions will then proceed as follows:
– Drivers heading towards Brussels on the E40 will be directed to the Kraainem entrance (nr. 20) via Bevrijdingslaan.
– Drivers heading towards Zaventem on the outer ring will be able to drive via Woluwelaan to Henneaulaan.
– Drivers wanting to take the inner ring can take the E40 towards Liege in Sint-Stevens-Woluwe, then join the inner ring towards Namur/Waterloo.
Four gantries with 16 RSS signs will be installed, providing ‘dynamic lane signage’ across the entire lane towards Brussels. This signage, with a separate LED sign above each lane, indicates the maximum speed for the traffic on the lane below. The system generally operates automatically based on loops in the road surface nearby. If there is a sudden accident or a vehicle breaks down, traffic controllers will immediately intervene and close the lane in question by displaying a red cross on the LED sign. When traffic is flowing smoothly and safely, the standard maximum speed of 120 km/h applies. In this case, the lane signage will show a green arrow.
This installation aims to improve safety and traffic management on the E40 towards Brussels, ensuring a smoother and more efficient travel experience for all road users.
