Feared by some, awaited by others, the traditional income declaration period is about to begin. This year, the online tax service will open its doors this Thursday, April 11: a press conference by the Minister for Public Accounts, Thomas Cazenave, will also be organized this day in Bercy.

Starting Thursday, individuals will be able to consult their pre-filled declaration online, correct it if necessary, then send it, once validated, to the tax administration. They will have several weeks to do this, the deadline varying depending on the department of residence. For those numbered 1 to 19 as well as non-resident French people, it is established on Thursday May 23. Residents of departments 2A to 54, including Corsica, will have until May 30, while those living in departments 55 to 95 and the DOM will be able to go until June 6.

It is also possible to declare your income on paper, in only two cases: if your household is not equipped with internet access, on the one hand, or if you are not able to make your declaration in line, on the other hand. “You will use the pre-filled paper declaration received in April/May 2024,” specifies the tax administration. The documents can also be downloaded online, “from the end of April/beginning of May”. In these cases, “The tax return must be filed before Tuesday May 21, 2024 at 11:59 p.m., including for French residents abroad,” specifies Bercy.

As a reminder, the scales were increased by 4.8% on January 1, in application of the 2024 budget, in order to follow the evolution of prices and avoid seeing employees penalized. The new tranches therefore range between 0%, below 11,294 euros, and 45% above 177,106 euros. It is better to declare your income on time, otherwise you will have to pay an increase which can range from 10%, in the absence of formal notice, to 40%, “when the declaration has not been filed in 30 days following receipt of formal notice. Added to this are late payment interest, equivalent to 0.2% of the tax due, for each month of delay. A costly lack of attention, therefore.
