The world of athletics mourns Kelvin Kiptum, world marathon record holder (2 hours 00 minutes and 35 seconds) who died on the road Monday in the Rift Valley, his region of origin in Kenya. His father questioned the circumstances of the death. “People came to the house a few days ago and didn’t show up,” Samson Cheruiyot revealed.
“They said they wanted to see him,” continued the athlete’s father. I asked them to identify themselves but they refused.” Samson Cheruiyot hopes that a thorough investigation will be carried out to clarify the mystery of this road accident which cost the life of Kiptum, winner of the London and Chicago marathons in 2023.
His father also confided his distress after losing his only son. “Kiptum was my only child,” said Samson Cheruiyot. He left me, his mother and his children. My wife had a health problem and she was advised not to have more children, which we respected. I am deeply saddened.”
