In extreme conditions, the DSM formation of French rider Romain Bardet won the first stage of the Tour of Spain on Saturday, a team time trial drawn in the streets of Barcelona and raced in pouring rain which caused many falls.
The Dutch team completed the course of just under 15 kilometers in 17 minutes and 30 seconds, beating the Movistar by a few tenths.
EF-Education, Remco Evenepoel’s Soudal-Quick, the defending champion, and Groupama-FDJ finished in a pocket handkerchief, six seconds behind.
The Jumbo-Visma of Jonas Vingegaard and Primoz Roglic finished at 32 seconds.
For his first participation in a Grand Tour, it is the Italian Lorenzo Milesi, 21, who will dream of the first red jersey of this 78th edition.
