The best-selling electric car in Europe is the Tesla Model Y with 136,564 units registered in the first half of 2023, while the Ford Kuga (manufactured in Valencia) leads the plug-in hybrid ranking with 26,428 deliveries. But the only model that appears at the top of both lists is the Volvo XC40 Recharge, both the 100% electric version and the plug-in hybrid.
The Pure Electric Volvo XC40 Recharge is the eighth most sold 100% electric model in Europe with 26,445 units registered until June, three times more than in the same period last year. Just 300 units separate it from the seventh position occupied by the Dacia Spring, according to data from the consultancy Jato Dynamics.
For its part, the Volvo XC40 Recharge PHEV occupies fifth position in the list of the 10 best-selling plug-in hybrids in Europe with 14,598 units registered in the first half. The Volvo XC60 (the ‘big brother’ of the XC40) is second with 20,923 deliveries, 50% more than the previous year.
Few electrified cars can boast such outstanding sales in both the electric version and the plug-in hybrid version, making the Volvo XC40 the European electrification champion. 68% of the total sales of the XC40 in Europe (41,043 out of a total of 60,180) correspond to electrified versions. Almost seven out of 10 units sold.
If we add to these data the sales of the rest of Volvo’s electrified models, such as the XC60 Recharge, the XC90 Recharge, the S60 Recharge, the S90 Recharge and the pure electric C40 (the EX30 has just arrived on the market), the Swedish brand is one of the most electrified in Europe. More than half of Volvo’s total sales in Europe are for electrified models.
Something similar is also happening in Spain, where the Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric is the eighth best-selling electric model (738 units registered until July) and the XC40 Recharge PHEV is fourth among plug-in hybrids (1,407 deliveries in the first seven months of the year). . 55% of the total sales of the Swedish SUV in Spain correspond to electrified versions classified with a ZERO label, according to Anfac data. The rest are almost all self-recharging hybrids with an ECO label.
The Pure Electric Volvo XC40 Recharge is available with various power levels (238, 252 and 408 hp) and offers a range of up to 573 kilometers on a single charge. Its price in Spain ranges from 47,900 euros for the Single Core version (with 238 CV of power and 467 km of autonomy) and 60,200 euros for the Twin Ultimate version, the most powerful and which represents the top of the range of the model.
For its part, the Volvo XC40 Recharge PHEV is available with two power levels (211 and 261 hp) and offers an electric range of up to 46 kilometers. It can be purchased in Spain from 51,500 euros.
