The Spaniard Maria Pérez won the 20km walk at the World Athletics Championships on Sunday morning in Budapest, the day after the coronation of her teammate Alvaro Martin over the same distance.

In 1:26:51, Pérez (27) beat Australian Jemima Montag and Italian Antonella Palmisano. Under a blazing sun, the world record holder for the 35km walk (2h37’15” in May), 4th in the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo, escaped from the leading peloton at the 16th kilometer, and was not seen again by its competitors.
