Should ultra-trails be opened up to a new category of participants? The dog Lucky has just entered the canines in the endurance race record book.
The story of this Swiss border terrier begins, as often at the time of the summer holidays, with a sad farewell: her masters entrusted her to the kennel in the canton of Bern before going to spend the summer in Berlin. But the cunning animal was able to take advantage of a hole in the fence of the enclosure where she was placed in boarding, says the Swiss media RTS, which collected the story of the journey from Lucky’s mistress, Jennifer Wagner. On the evening of July 31, on the eve of the national holiday of the Swiss Confederation, Lucky took to the field without bothering to ask the opinion of his hosts (or his jailers, depending on how we see things).
What happened in the hours of freedom that followed? Mystery… For now, Lucky has not deigned to reveal the secrets of his escapade. The fact remains that if the dog left a kennel located in the canton of Bern in the evening, she was only found in the early morning, on a road on the shores of Lake Geneva, in the canton of Geneva – at nearly 160 km from its starting point, therefore. It was a Genevan who spotted her along the road and alerted the police.
The Geneva cantonal police therefore amicably arrested the fugitive, making a detour to the airport supermarket to get some pâté, and alerted her masters, who dispatched a trusted person to pick her up. Lucky was unharmed during her long run, and the only traces of the adventure were a few ticks hidden in her fur.
To tell the truth, even if the feat is a dream, the jealous are already launching rumors of doping. The owner of the animal herself was skeptical: as Lucky is a very sociable dog, it is “likely that someone took her by car to Geneva”, estimated Jennifer Wagner, who doubts that she could cover such a distance so quickly.
