American Hunter Armstrong was crowned world champion in the 50m backstroke on Sunday on the last day of the Worlds in Fukuoka, Japan.

Armstrong, 22, won in 24 seconds and 05/100th ahead of his compatriot Justin Ress (24 sec 24), defending champion over the distance, and the Chinese Xu Jiayu (24 sec 50). Hunter Armstrong, who had so far only won world gold during a relay in 2022 in Budapest, therefore offers himself a first individual title.

He also won bronze in the 100m backstroke earlier this week in Fukuoka.
