On Monday, 31-year-old Dutch player Quincy Promes was sentenced to 18 months in prison by an Amsterdam court for stabbing a cousin at a family party. The player who had pleaded not guilty to “attempted manslaughter”, lives in Russia and did not attend this trial.

The winger was accused of punching his cousin in the leg at a birthday party in July 2020 when an altercation broke out over a supposedly stolen necklace.

The court explained that it had “taken into consideration that the suspect was a professional player and a public figure when making an exemplary decision”. “The court also blames the suspect for not having assumed his responsibilities,” he added.

The prosecutor, who had demanded two years in prison last year, had to dismiss the charges of attempted murder, for lack of evidence.

The investigation was triggered after wiretaps in a separate drug-trafficking case also involving Promes. The player has also been prosecuted since May for importing several hundred kilos of cocaine, in particular via the Belgian port of Antwerp.

Promes, who scored seven goals in 50 appearances with the Oranje, played in the Euros in 2021 with his national team, but has not been recalled since.

The player, who broke through in Twente before experiencing a first exile to Spartak Moscow (2014-2018), joined Ajax in 2019 from Sevilla FC. He was playing in Amsterdam at the time of the events. Due to his legal setbacks, he then returned to Russia in 2021, where he was notably named player of the year in 2017.
