The 41-year-old Spaniard was named director of the Davis Cup finals by the International Tennis Federation on Thursday. He will lead the group stage (September 12-17) and ‘Final 8’ (November 21-26).

I have very special memories in this competition, so I am very happy to play a leading role in these events. As an athlete, representing your country is the pinnacle of your career. As Tournament Director my sole focus will be to build on the success of the competition and make it the best possible experience for players and fans around the world, I can’t wait to get started”.

Winner of the competition four times with Spain (2008, 2009, 2011 and 2019), the left-hander will retire this season.

Italy, Canada, Sweden and Chile will play in Group A in Bologna in September. Group B made up of Great Britain, Australia, France and Switzerland in Manchester. In group C in Valencia, we find Spain, Serbia, the Czech Republic and South Korea and finally in group D Croatia, the Netherlands, the USA and Finland.
