Manchester United announced on Friday that their Argentinian central defender Lisandro Martinez suffered a metatarsal fracture on Thursday during the match against Sevilla in the Europa League and that he will be out for the rest of the season.

His central axis partner, Frenchman Raphaël Varane, also injured, will be away from the field for “a few weeks”.

Martinez injured himself in the 86th minute of the game and had to be carried off the pitch.

Varane had left his partners at halftime, replaced by Harry Maguire.

These two injuries contributed to a disastrous evening for the Red Devils, who were forced to a 2-2 draw after leading 2-0 and hitting a post in an action that would have taken them 3-0 up, before scoring two goals against their camp.

It’s a big blow for coach Erik ten Hag, while the Martinez-Varane hinge had been one of the most consistent in the Premier League.

The infernal schedule of the team, which has played two matches a week since the World Cup and could well end the season on this rhythm, is undoubtedly no stranger to these physical glitches.

Winner of the League Cup, Manchester United is 4th in the league and in the race for qualification for the next C1.

He must also still play the semi-finals of the FA Cup and his quarter-final second leg of C3 in Seville next Thursday.
