Islamists and right-wing extremists like to portray equality as a compulsion under which women are left defenseless in a brutal world, instead of being able to retreat to a safe home and be cared for by their husbands. This clumsy mood-mongering is easy to counter, because especially in a free society, women can only be wives and mothers if they want to. Nobody drags her out of the house. But most women make different choices for a variety of reasons.
More dangerous is another form of propaganda, which was submitted to me after the presentation of the guidelines for feminist foreign policy at the Federal Foreign Office on March 1 by a number of supporters of this policy.
