The Greens faction in the new Berlin House of Representatives is led by Bettina Jarasch and Werner Graf. According to a parliamentary group spokesman, Jarasch received 29 of 33 valid votes cast (87.9 percent) in the election on Tuesday, Graf 25 of 32 (78.1 percent).
While Graf has been the parliamentary group leader since March 2022, Jarasch is new to the office. She was the Green Party’s top candidate in the repeat elections in February and was previously the Senator for the Environment and Climate Protection in the Red-Green-Red Senate.
The parliamentary group announced on Tuesday evening that Jarasch would focus on her work as a senator until a new senate was sworn in. In her role as parliamentary group leader, she will concentrate on the internal reorganization of the parliamentary group until the change of government.
The faction has 34 MPs, making it the strongest of the three opposition factions. For Jarasch, Silke Gebel vacated her place in the dual leadership of the parliamentary group, which she had held since 2016.
The new House of Representatives is convening for its constituent session this Thursday.
