Fleeing from the police, a driver left the road at night near the Berlin Holocaust memorial. The 39-year-old crashed his vehicle into a pillar of the memorial and damaged it, a police spokeswoman said. The amount of property damage was not immediately clear. Pictures published by the “Berliner Zeitung” showed fragments from the stele belonging to the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe.

According to the police spokeswoman, the driver should be checked because the license plate number of his vehicle did not belong to the vehicle. During his subsequent flight from the police, the man also rammed and damaged a police vehicle. After the collision with the stele, the man and two other vehicle occupants initially fled on foot. But they were arrested shortly thereafter.
