There are signs of a change at the top of the parliamentary group in the Berlin Greens. The Greens’ top candidate in the repeat election and Senator for the Environment and Climate Protection, Bettina Jarasch, has announced her candidacy for the parliamentary group chair. The group announced this after a meeting on Tuesday. This also applies to Werner Graf, who was previously at the head of the group with Silke Gebel.

“Silke Gebel, who successfully led the parliamentary group for years, took a step aside for Bettina Jarasch, who ran for the party as the party’s top candidate in the last election,” the Greens parliamentary group continued. The parliamentary group leadership is expected to be re-elected on Tuesday.

Jarasch had stated that the goal for the repeat election in Berlin was that the Greens wanted to be the strongest party and that she herself wanted to be the governing mayor. In the February 12 election, however, the Greens came third, albeit just behind the SPD. Both parties achieved 18.4 percent, well behind the election winner, the CDU, with 28.4 percent.

On Thursday, the CDU and SPD want to start coalition talks about forming a black-red two-party coalition. If they end successfully, the Greens, who have been involved in the state government since 2016, would have to go into opposition.
