The 21-year-old, who shot the school secretary with a crossbow in a Bremerhaven high school, has been sentenced to eight years in prison for attempted murder. The Bremen district court also ordered placement in a psychiatric hospital on Monday. The presiding judge said the placement had priority over the prison sentence.

The 21-year-old shot the school secretary in his former school with a crossbow last May, critically injuring her. A short time later he shot a passer-by at a nearby crossroads.

The accused again denied any intent to kill on Monday. “I swear by everything I have,” he said. Instead of going to prison, he would rather go to forensic psychiatry because he hopes for successful treatment there. After a possible prison sentence without therapy, he fears becoming violent again: “I don’t feel like it.”
