Greenpeace activists occupied the roof of the SPD party headquarters on Monday morning and protested against the expansion of freeways. About ten activists were on the roof, as the Berlin police announced on Monday.
Two of them roped down and put up a banner on the house that said “Dare to make progress: rail instead of concrete”. Ten other Greenpeace activists wanted to demonstrate on the ground, but were stopped, it was said. The police are on site with a large contingent of around 100 emergency services.
“We are here because the SPD is currently tipping the scales when it comes to building new autobahns in Germany,” said Lena Donat from Greenpeace of the German Press Agency. Greenpeace is demanding that the SPD show its colors and stand by its values and promises. “Building highways is not socially just,” said Donat.
