The police in Bulgaria have discovered a truck with the bodies of what appears to be 18 suffocated migrants. According to initial information, there were around 40 migrants in the truck, the Interior Ministry said on Friday. The survivors were taken to hospitals. According to media reports, the victims were people from Afghanistan.

According to the authorities, the driverless truck was left on an expressway near the capital Sofia. The migrants were found in a secret compartment under a load of wood.

It was initially unclear how long they had been in the truck. The Interior Ministry said there had been no traffic accidents. The police received a tip about an abandoned truck.

The Bulgarian Ministry of Health said most of the survivors were in very poor condition. “They have been suffering from a lack of oxygen, their clothes are wet, they are cold and obviously haven’t eaten for days,” said Health Minister Assen Mejidev.
