An Israeli police officer has been killed during a routine check at a military post in east Jerusalem. The police said he was attacked and injured by a young Palestinian with a knife there on Monday. A security guard then opened fire and apparently hit the officer. The police officer later succumbed to his injuries, it said. It was initially unclear whether he died from the stab wounds or the gunshot wounds.
A 21-year-old Palestinian died in a shootout with Israeli soldiers in the West Bank on Monday morning, the Palestinian authorities said. At least seven other Palestinians were injured in the incident in Nablus.
The Israeli military said it carried out raids throughout the West Bank overnight. The soldiers came under fire when they arrested two men suspected of killing an Israeli soldier in October. According to the military, the two men they were looking for were injured in an exchange of fire with soldiers and arrested. It was unclear whether the 21-year-old Palestinian who was killed was involved in the shooting.
Since a series of deadly attacks on Israelis in the spring of last year, the Israeli army has been raiding the West Bank almost every night. According to the Israeli human rights group B’Tselem, nearly 150 Palestinians were killed in the West Bank and East Jerusalem last year. This year there have been 46. The Israeli military has said most of those killed are extremists. Young people who were protesting against the military operations by throwing stones, as well as bystanders, were also killed. Attacks by Palestinians on Israelis killed around 30 people in 2022, and at least 11 have died so far this year.
