In the future, the Berlin public prosecutor’s office will pursue attacks on rescue and fire brigades with the help of a specialized department – “regardless of the events around the turn of the year 2022/2023”. This was announced by the head of the Berlin public prosecutor, Jörg Raupach, and the state fire director, Karsten Homrighausen, in a joint statement. “Attacks on rescue workers are unacceptable,” said Raupach. Consciously accepting the risk that the sick and injured will not receive medical care in time makes these acts incomprehensible.

This should give the Berlin fire brigade and other rescue organizations a clear contact point at the public prosecutor’s office. The concentration of responsibility should also lead to more efficient procedures and ensure uniform processing, in which the needs of the rescue workers concerned are better taken into account.

On New Year’s Eve, police officers and firefighters were attacked in several German cities, particularly violently in Berlin. As a result, there was a nationwide debate about the protection of the rescue workers and better prosecution of the suspects.
