English international midfielder Kalvin Phillips, rarely used at Manchester City, joined Londoners West Ham on Friday on loan for the rest of the season with the hope of increasing his playing time in preparation for Euro-2024.
The 28-year-old defensive midfielder, helmed by the Spaniard Rodri, has never managed to establish himself with the reigning English and European champions, whom he joined in July 2022 after eight seasons at Leeds, where he was born. “I visualize the team and I have a little difficulty seeing him (in it),” admitted coach Pep Guardiola in mid-December.
Phillips only participated in 31 games in a year and a half with the Citizens. He has not started any Premier League matches this season and only two last year, disrupted by a shoulder injury. Despite his setbacks at City, Phillips continued to be called up by England manager Gareth Southgate. By joining West Ham, he should find a starting place at the club and strengthen his chances of participating in the Euro next summer in Germany.
The east London club have an option to buy at the end of the loan, according to British media. West Ham are sixth after 21 days of the Premier League, five points behind fifth, Tottenham. The winner of the last Europa Conference League is also qualified for the round of 16 of the Europa League.
“We have admired him for a long time and we believe that he will bring strength and competition to our team,” commented coach David Moyes, quoted in a club press release with the burgundy and sky blue jersey. “Kalvin is an English international midfielder, with proven experience in the Premier League. We are delighted to welcome him to the group and look forward to working with him,” he added.
