The Berlin Superior Court has sentenced an IS supporter to two years and nine months in prison. On Wednesday, the 31-year-old was found guilty of membership in a terrorist organization abroad, breach of duty of care and education, and tax evasion.

“She deliberately went to a war zone with the children,” said presiding judge Detlev Schmidt in the verdict. The woman has represented a radical Islamist attitude since mid-2016 at the latest and identified with the ideology of the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS).

With its verdict, the court stayed just below the application of the Berlin Public Prosecutor’s Office, which had demanded a prison sentence of two years and ten months. The defense had also requested this – although they wanted the time spent in Syrian camps to be counted. The court did not follow that. The verdict was preceded by talks between the parties involved in the process.
