In a “completely littered” apartment in a basement in Baden-Württemberg, investigators discovered 27 firearms lying around – four of them were unsecured on the refrigerator. The public prosecutor’s office in Heidelberg and the police headquarters in Mannheim announced on Wednesday that an arrest warrant had been issued against the resident, a 70-year-old marksman, for illegal possession of these weapons.

During the search in Sinsheim, three weapons of war, numerous weapon parts and ammunition were discovered. Everything was lying around in the open. The operation was made more difficult because of the overall condition of the apartment.

In a second apartment in Philippsburg, around 40 kilometers away, the officers found 36 other legal weapons that were properly stored and registered with the weapons authority. Nevertheless, the public prosecutor’s office will check whether these are also confiscated. All weapons were secured and handed over to the weapons authority. The searches lasted several days and were only completed on Monday due to the littered condition of the apartment.

According to the current state of knowledge, the 70-year-old procured the arsenal because of his enthusiasm for weapons, the investigators said. The man has been in custody since Friday – due to the risk of blackout and escape.
