The Organization of Consumers and Users has been analyzing the most reliable brands of cars and has also analyzed corn pancakes. Now, it is focusing on salmorejo, one of the top summer products. It is a nutritious, cold cream made from tomato. It is best to make it at home but sometimes it is easier to buy it in a supermarket.
To determine which products are best, the OCU has tested 29 products. Salmorejo contains phytonutrients found in tomato and extra-virgin olive oil. Salmorejo also has fiber, if the tomatoes are not strained after being crushed. Although homemade salmorejo contains bread and oil, its energy content is low at 124 kcal/100 ml or about 300 kcal/serving (15% of the recommended daily caloric intake of an adult). This dish has a low energy content but high nutritional value.
Salmorejo is very easy to make. The OCU explains the pros and cons about packaged salmorejo and the best supermarket options.
-From the supermarket: The more comfortable option, but more costly
Packaged salmorejo has 3 benefits
It is an easy way to enjoy this dish any time you like.
It is convenient, saves time and gives you a quick and easy way to make a delicious dish.
It is easy to transport. It can be taken anywhere without worrying about the container breaking or opening. Some manufacturers also include individual containers.
It is rare that you can have a tasting that is worth the cost. A liter of packaged salmorejo costs 3.68 euros. However, the price range for this product is very wide at between 1.59 and 5.20 euros per Liter. The average price of salmorejos under private label, distribution or commercial brands is significantly different. The former is 40% more expensive than the latter. There are actually very high quality products at very low prices among supermarket brands.
Industrial salmorejo has a lower energy intake than home-made salmorejo. Its average energy consumption is 107 kcal/100ml.
Even the best salmorejo packaged doesn’t taste as good as homemade. There are few people who make salmorejos based on only four ingredients: tomatoes, bread, extra-virgin olive oil, salt, and pepper. You can even buy packaged salmorejos, which have a similar list of ingredients to gazpacho’s, as they include pepper, cucumber and onion, and vinegar.
OCU has conducted a study on 29 industrial salmorejos. They were able to confirm that the quality of industrial salmorejos is not in conflict with its price, and that they are a viable alternative to home-brewing. We found that quality products are available for as low as 2 euros. For example, Salmorejo Auchan (1.68 euro/litre) and Salmorejo Alipende (1.70 euro/litre).
