– Everything is named after someone who did damage or murdered people, I think, must have new name, says Lidia Thorpe, who is the first aboriginal woman, who has been elected to the australian parliament, to The Herald Sun.
She calls for, among politicians and groups of the country’s indigenous people together discussing the idea of finding a new name for the state.
– It may even remain the same, if that is what people want, if it is a part of the outcome of the negotiations of a treaty, where everyone has the opportunity to understand both sides, says Lidia Thorpe to The Herald Sun.
Her call comes in the wake of demonstrations organized by the organization Black Lives Matter has sparked a debate on whether to demolish statues and monuments, which is linked to Australia’s history of colonisation, down.
