Ghent ‘The Scream’, the well-known willow along a wandelpand in the Bourgoyen, his face is lost. The face, meanwhile, dead wood, was from the tree, scratched and stolen. “It was a symbol, an icon,” said Bart De Munck of the Groendienst.
The tree is part of a row of pollard willows along a footpath in the natuurcentrum Bourgoyen-Ossemeersen. He was recognizable to the notable ‘holes’ in his tribe. It looks like the tree is a face, that strong similarities with the eponymous painting by Edvard Munch from 1893. “Willows are the years of the inside is hollow,” says De Munck. “Also in the bark was a bit dead, and so are the gaps.”
