Sexarbejdernes most celebrated work area in Amsterdam should no longer be a tourist destination.
this is the sound of it from the political leaders in the capital of the Netherlands.
It writes the New York Times.
the Red Light District, with the original name ‘De Wallen’, is both famous and notorious for its large areas of glazing, where the city’s prostitutes can offer their services under red lighting.
– We prohibit the tours, which take visitors along the sexarbejdernes windows, not only because we want to prevent congestion in the Red Light District, but also because it is not respectful for sexarbejderne, says Amsterdam underborgmester Udo Kock.
Although the prohibition of the guided tours in the area first will start the 1. January next year, so there will already get restrictions.
Until now has guided tours may take place at 23: 00, but from 1. april it will not be allowed after 19: 00 hours.
– It is outdated to treat sex workers as a tourist attraction, says Udo Kock.
the Restrictions and, ultimately, the ban is intended to improve the sexarbejdernes working conditions and to prevent that potential customers are being scared away by the many tourists who overbeglor the windows and thus the transactions.
Over 1000 tourists passing every week through the district, and it bothers both the prostitutes as well as local businesses. Around 80 percent of the surveyed sex workers argue that it has a negative effect on their business.
in Addition to the above restrictions, the city will also cut the maximum number of tourists on a tour down from 20 to 15, while the tourists will be treasured for their participation in the trip.
