Animals A Skywalker-gibbon, a bat with colored stekeltjeshaar, a path with elfenhoorntjes and a catfish that is a bit like a failed pancake: these are the most remarkable animals in the previous year have been discovered in Southeast Asia.

In Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar, the countries where the Mekong flows, scientists have found in 2017 no less than 157 new animal and plant species. There were some fascinating creatures, such as the Skywalker Hoolock gibbon.

Which type is actually discovered in the lab, says spokesperson Dylan de Gruijl of the World wildlife Fund, and the discoveries compiled in a report that is published today. “Scientists compared the physical and genetic properties with other gibbon species, and found that this is a new kind. He is named after the character Luke Skywalker from Starwars because the researchers are fans of that movie and because the scientific name in the Chinese ‘heavenly moment’ means.
