The ambitious EU climate protection plans could increase the renovation costs for residential buildings in Germany to a three-digit billion amount every year. By 2030, residential buildings are to be brought up to at least European efficiency class E. Class D should be mandatory by 2033.

The project goes far beyond previous proposals by the Council and the EU Commission, and Germany supports the plans. In a letter to Minister of Construction Geywitz, which is available to WELT, the stakeholders warn of the consequences: “In Germany, almost 45 percent of all residential buildings would have to be renovated within nine years. That is an absurd suggestion.”
