Germany has vinfronten undergone a dramatic development in the last three decades, and the German wine producers are a source of wines in absolute world class – both in the sweet and dry genre.

today, the market has changed, there is greater demand for dry white wines and, not least, quality over quantity. Riesling is still the largest and most well-known grape. But where white wines normally should be drunk young, it develops the German riesling wines out of storage and gets great, almost mineral after 10-15 years. In addition, more and more gradually starting to get the eyes up for the excellent pinot blanc wines (weissburgunder), sylvanere and pinot noir wines (spätburgunder), which our neighbours to the south produces. It is all very exciting wines, which are very different, especially from the overseas wines. Germany is the third largest producer of pinot noir in the world.

The German wines are cool in style and with a lower alcohol content, something that is gaining ground as a counterpoint to the sharp, alkoholtunge wines, which have dominated the past decade. Germany is therefore about to find its very own niche in the light end of the vinspektret – not, however, what quality is concerned, here is the dance with the big boys.
