For the first time in almost six months, China has reported a death related to the corona virus. The dead man is an 87-year-old man from Beijing, the National Health Commission said on Sunday. Overall, the number of officially reported corona deaths in China rose to 5,227. One death was last registered in Shanghai on May 26.
China also reported a total of 24,215 new infections on Sunday, most of them asymptomatic cases. The day before, the number of new infections was 24,473. Of the infections, 2267 were symptomatic and 22,168 were asymptomatic.
The country is pursuing a strict zero-Covid policy with lockdowns of megacities, strict quarantine measures and mass testing. The measures have led to severe restrictions in people’s everyday lives and in the economy, which is why public displeasure with the authorities has recently grown.
Most recently, the population was asked to stay at home at the weekend due to a renewed increase in numbers in large parts of the Chinese capital.
Journeys between individual city districts were prohibited; many restaurants, businesses, malls, offices and apartment blocks have been closed or locked down. The day before, around 500 new infections were found among the 21 million residents.
