The Danish lieutenant-general Michael Lollesgaard, which stands at the head of 75 the UN observers, on Tuesday arrived at the important port city of Hodeidah in Yemen.

Here shall he as the head of the observer mission to monitor the peace agreement was signed in Sweden in december.

Lollesgaard has not given any opinion in connection with its arrival. It is the UN security council, which in January appointed him as the leader of the mission.

The fragile peace agreement of december was reached between the saudi-backed government and houthierne, which is supported by the other superpower in the Middle east – Iran. It aims to prevent large-scale confrontations in the port city of Hodeidah.

A large share of the country’s goods and emergency aid arrives to just Hodeidah. That is why the coastal town of an important lifeline for millions of yemenitter, there are starving during the civil war.

The two sides can’t agree on who has the right to have control over the city.

The Danish lieutenant-general replaces Dutch Patrick Cammaert, which went of after just a month in office.

A UN special envoy is working to bring to fruition a prisoner exchange, which should help in the efforts to achieve peace in the four year long war.

There are several thousands prisoners. It says Martin Griffith, the leader of the UN special envoy.

Success is not only hugely important for them to be released. It is also about the political process.

– We hope that the parties will work together to solve the problems, which separates them, so that peace can return to Yemen, says Griffith.

He considers fangeudvekslingen as vital to get the conflict in the Yemen to life. Tens of thousands of people have died and over 15 million people are starving.

Michael Lollesgaard has previously been in charge of a peacekeeping mission in Mali in 2015 and 2016. In 2017, he was Denmark’s military representative in Nato and the EU.
