64 metres down below the ocean’s surface on the bottom of the sea off Malin Head in Ireland. Here lies the wreck of the HMS Audacious’ turret, and a photograph of it is precisely the reason why Andersen can now call themselves the winner of the title as the year’s best undervandsfotograf.

The competition is the Underwater Photographer of the Year, UPY, who has named the winners in a number of categories. One of the categories is ‘wreck’, and it is the, the dane has taken the victory in.

I had posted 20 pictures in a different style, I would spread my chance to win.

Anyway, thought Rene Andersen, that he had lost.

– It took me two days to find out I had won, because the email ended up in the spam inbox. So it was so surreal, because I was in the days before had gone and kicked myself over how bad it was that I had not gotten a price. And then I had the email all the time.

the Jury had great words of praise for the dane:

‘So simple, but so powerful; the additional lighting of the tower and the diver perfectly placed. The competition in the category was very strong this year, it is a deserved winner, and it is refreshing to read the acknowledgement to Leigh Bishops pioneering work.’

Andersen, who come from Slagelse, made the trip to Ireland in July of last year. After having drilled many meters down to the wreck, he asked a camera tripod up on the sea floor, set the camera to selvudløse every second, and he even swam up behind the gun turret with a large light.

– One has not such a long time because of the depth, so when we finally arrived, I hurried over to put the stand up and take the picture.

therefore, It is René Andersen himself, you can see in the background of the image.

It was the second time I went there, because the wrecks are so amazing.

It was, therefore, also plan to take pictures for the photo competition, and Andersen had therefore planned the layout and composition of the image beforehand.

His inspiration for the image was the famous explorer Leigh Bishop, who was also undervandsfotograf, who has just taken a well-known black-and-white image of the HMS Audacious.

René Andersen has never taken a photography course, did not grow up with a family of divers or photographers, and his wife has not interest in the hobby.

Yet the 44-year-old so bitten by the undervandsfotografiet, to he about five times each year traveling to remote destinations for diving and photographing under water.

– I must, in fact, to Norway on Sunday, then I go and are in ‘pakkemode,’ he says.

His interest arose when he took a prøvedyk in the year 2000 in Greece and later went to the Red Sea to dive.

– Here, I took a small compact camera with a plastic waterproof case. The eye catching complete. Subsequently, I could just feel in myself that I had to go out and have my own equipment.

It featured, just so quiet, such that he now travels with the 85 kilos in the luggage, when he takes out into the world to dive.

According to Andersen, he is not worth much as a photographer in the country.

There are usually just pressed on ‘auto.’

It is under the water, that he has his talents, and even though it is self-taught, so it has become so great a passion, that it now almost hurts to dive without the camera.

I once took a supplementary diving course, where I messed up. I thought that it would be easier to focus on the course, if I left my camera on the land. When we get out there, it turns out to be the best looking wreck with a fiskestime, who just swims straight up over your head. For the hell that is. It was the best motive, and so was my camera inside the country, laughs Andersen.
