The most common procedure for getting a driver’s licence is to apply for one. However, it can be complicated. In this country, the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT), and the Government allow drivers only 18 years old.

Many young people start thinking about driving school once they turn 18, although some begin earlier. They can take the theory exam but not the practical.

After passing all the tests, the examinee is issued a driving license. This carries a lot of responsibility. Knowing the laws governing vehicle operation and the risks to public health that can result from a traffic accident is important.

Driving a vehicle is one of the responsibilities. You must renew your driving licence from time to time. It is mandatory that you renew your license before the expiration date. We could be fined if we don’t renew it before the deadline.

Most Spaniards need to renew their passport every ten years. However, this can vary from one person to another. For those over 65, the limit is half due to physical limitations that may change with age.

Driving with an expired license will result in a 200 euro penalty from the General Directorate of Traffic. It does not result in any points being lost on our permit but it can be a problem.

The DGT permits you to renew your permit for less than three months. After presenting all the required documents and paying the fees, you will receive a new card. It will be issued at the time and date that we have chosen, depending on our abilities and age.

However, not all applicants must pay the renewal fees. People over 70 years old are not required to pay the fee to renew their permit. They only have to cover the cost of any medical check-ups.
