Gent, neither of them have any theater experience but within less than a week, these five physicians from AZ Sint-Lucas six times in a row for a sold-out hall Range. “It started a year ago with a crazy inspiration but only last week we started to realise that it really is”, they laugh.
It started as an invasion of anesthesiste Birgitte Vangehuchten. “I have long animals crocheted for charity. All doctors have a private dierenmuts children at ease. By all that crocheting started my hands hurt and I was looking for a different way to do something for the good purpose. Suddenly that idea to a play to play. Together with Marianne (Lippens, nucleariste) we then went in search of colleagues for which we thought they sometimes the acting could have”, says Birgitte. Thus, gastroenterologist, Harald Peeters, clinical biologist Jos Van Acker and psychiatrist Koen Willems there.
With Lucas Tavernier, however, they found also a well-known director. “Actually, it was the division of roles already happened when I joined. Normally, roles are also chosen because they are at the face and the look of the actor. That was wonderfully the case,” says the director.
In the hospital is the stage play the talk of the town. “That is beautiful. Not a day goes by without I the question of get how it goes with our play. This really has an atmosphere of connection is created between the colleagues”, says Koen.
And doctors are now all intertwined with their character? “Actually,” says Koen. “If I Harald meet in the hallway in the hospital then we are very briefly Serge and Paul from the play.”
“Sometimes I have operations together with Birgitte,” says Harald. “She is the anesthesiste but in the piece we are a couple. Then we fall sometimes in our role as a couple if we were able to address during the surgery. Then you see the assistants thinking ‘what is with those two?’”
The doctors opted for The Dinner, an adaptation of a book by the Dutch write Herman Koch. A serious play so. The whole story takes place during a five-course meal. During the piece there will also be a full menu eaten, including wine. “Rehearse, we do still without wine, but for the premiere we will have another drink have to try,” says the director.
The next week to play the doctors yet two try-outs in a nursing home. “The problem with doctors is that we are all the strebers are and really want to do,” says Koen.
The proceeds of the piece go to Revive vzw and H. E. L. P. association.
