He doesn’t stop anymore. While Yannick, his film released in August, is still showing in certain theaters, Quentin Dupieux reveals the first images and a date for his brand new film Daaaaaali!.
On February 7, Gilles Lellouche, Édouard Baer, Jonathan Cohen, Pio Marmaï and Didier Flamand will share the role of the Catalan surrealist artist in the cinema. The five interpreters of Dali find themselves facing a young journalist played by Anaïs Demoustier, who tries, as best she can, to interview him. Presented out of competition during the 80th edition of the Venice Film Festival, this 1 hour 17 film (only ten minutes longer than his last film, Yannick) is obviously not a biopic.

The film opens with a reproduction of a Dali painting, a fountain piano, and the tone is set: repeating dreams, characters who appear and disappear inexplicably, absurd dialogues. The stories of each Dali are nested within each other, “like Russian dolls”, tells Édouard Baer to AFP, even admitting that he “did not know that there were other Dali”, the actors not crossing paths during filming. “I was afraid that a single actor would not be enough to embody all (the) panel of madness” of Dali, explained Quentin Dupieux to AFP on the Lido.
A century after having inspired Buñuel for Le Chien Andalou, Dali continues to haunt the seventh art: Dupieux explains having been inspired by “the Dali of (his) childhood” whom he saw “on television in the 1980s, who did not doesn’t give a damn about anything anymore and is funnier and funnier. The more it degenerates, the funnier it is. “My one and only goal is to entertain you and make you laugh intelligently, in slightly special and new corners,” explains the 49-year-old director about his next film. “Me, when I hear a room laughing, in front of Daaaaaali! or in front of Yannick, a real honest laugh, I am very satisfied”.
In addition to a very nice cast, Quentin Dupieux also offered the services of Thomas Bangalter, ex-member of Daft Punk for the composition of the original soundtrack.
