The Greek Parliament has approved on Friday the agreement to Overcome the nearly three-decade-long name dispute with the neighbors of Macedonia. 153 deputies voted for the agreement. 146 voted against it. There was one abstention. This is the Parliament’s Bureau was informed.
This is the renaming of the Northern neighbors of Greece from Republic of Macedonia in the North of Macedonia. The Parliament in Skopje has already approved the agreement and the corresponding amendments to the Constitution.
In return for the renaming of the neighboring country of Athens, no longer wants to block the approach Skopje’s EU and the inclusion of the neighbours in Nato. Nationalists in both countries had protested to the last against this agreement.
After the independence, in the process of the disintegration of Yugoslavia in 1991, the country was under the name Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (abbreviation: FYROM) a member of the United Nations. Greece stock since then on a name change, because a province in the North of the country also bears the name Macedonia (Greek: Makedonia). (nag/AFP)
