The Federal Council will vote today on whether the Maghreb countries and Georgia should be declared to be safe countries of Origin. The Greens are against it – a majority is therefore unlikely.

Prior to today’s vote by the Federal Council on the classification of Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco and Georgia as “safe countries of Origin” is not a majority for the plans in view. Green party leader Anna Lena Baerbock made it clear that their party rejects the initiative of the Grand coalition. Without the votes of States where the Greens join the government, is the necessary majority in the chamber of States is very unlikely.

“The Instrument of the so-called safe countries of origin is an interference with the individual right of asylum,” said Baerbock the “editors’ network Germany”. The Federal constitutional court have established clear criteria for the classification. Such a country must be trace-free, in all regions and for all population groups. “This is in the Maghreb countries for homosexuals, women, journalists, or trade unionists is not the case,” said the Green-Chairman.
