the Group that was behind american history’s largest collective suicide was known as “the Peoples Temple”. They had built a new utopian society in the jungles, called the Jonetown, after there had arisen certain problems in the UNITED states, with bl.a. tax fraud and sexual assault . Cult undisputed leader was the charismatic apocalyptic prophet Jim Jones. Jim Jones, who today in the UNITED states is the personification of a mad cult leader, was the main driving force behind the gruesome tragedy. Jim Jones died by shooting himself. In addition, congressman Leo Ryan, who was on inspection after rumors of human rights violations in Jonestown, also murdered by the cult.
In all, died of 918 people, the largest loss of american civilian life until the 11. september 2001.

But Jim Jones is not the only religious madman, in modern times, who is responsible for the tragic deaths.
Murderous crusaders
The originally French order’ordre du Temple Solaire (OTS) was a secret order, which was based on the myth that Tempelridderordnen still existed. The order was formed in Geneva in 1984 by Josepgh Di Mambro and Luc Jouret. OTS of the order is believed still to exist and have approx. 500 active members.

‘Heavenss Gate’ was a dommedagskult from California, USA, led by the demagogic Marshall Applewhite called ‘Do’. 21 women and 18 men committed voluntary suicide with poison over three days in march 1997. The cult combined elements of christianity with mystical elements of ufologi. The members believed that through their suicide would free the soul from the body’s outer casing and leave the earth via extraterrestrial spaceships, which reportedly have a connection to the comet Hale-Bopp, close passed the Earth in 1997. When the dead members were found they were all dressed in identical clothes, lying in their bunk beds in the cult headquarters in San Diego, California, and all wore a bracelet with the scripture, ‘Heaven’s Gate Away Team’.

‘The Branch Davidians were a splinter group from the american ‘Seventh-Day Adventists’, a religious order that is also found in Denmark. The group broke out in the 1930s, but is known today because of the tragedy in Waco, Texas in 1993 that claimed the lives of several people, there in the bland leader David Koresh, who even thought he was a new Messiah.
