British police are investigating two teenagers on suspicion of murder following the killing of a trans teenage girl in north-west England. An official investigation has been launched against a 15-year-old girl and a boy of the same age, Cheshire County Police said on Wednesday before the magistrate’s appointment. Among other things, investigators are investigating whether 16-year-old Brianna Ghey was killed out of hatred for transgender people.
Ghey had been stabbed the previous week. Her body was found in a park in the village of Culcheth, between Liverpool and Manchester, on Saturday. The murder of the 16-year-old sparked horror and sympathy across the country.
Vigils were held in Bristol and Liverpool on Tuesday evening. Further events are planned for the coming days in London, Leeds, Glasgow and Belfast.
Ghey had many fans on the online service TikTok. Her family described the teenager as a “beloved daughter, granddaughter and babysitter”. She was “beautiful, witty and funny” and “strong, fearless and unique”. As of Wednesday morning, donation website GoFundMe had received more than £75,000 in donations for Ghey’s family.
