The Israeli Ambassador to Germany, Ron Prosor, has sharply criticized an event planned by the Goethe-Institut Tel Aviv and the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation. On Twitter, Prosor wrote about the panel discussion “Holocaust, Nakba and German culture of remembrance”: “On the day to commemorate the November pogroms of 1938, the Goethe Institute and the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation decided to play down the memory of the Holocaust.” That was “unacceptable ‘ and ‘disrespectful’.
According to the announcement of the event, it should be about the “fateful year 1948, when hundreds of thousands were victims of flight and expulsion by Jewish fighters”. Almost 75 years after its founding, “remembrance in Israel remains a politically contested terrain”. Participants in the discussion are Charlotte Wiedemann, Bashir Bashir and Amos Goldberg. According to the announcement, Wiedemann is committed to a “new empathetic remembrance that does justice to different sides and promotes solidarity instead of victim competition”.
The event was also criticized by the chairman of the Yad Vashem Memorial. Dani Dayan wrote on Twitter that the planned event was an “intolerable distortion of the Holocaust”.
