The German chemistry and medicinalgigant Bayer has been ordered to pay a compensation of 530 million kroner to an american pensioner, who got a cancer after long-term use of the herbicide Roundup.
the Verdict was by a district court in San Francisco on Wednesday, writes the news agency AP.
According to a unanimous jury has the company acted ‘negligently’ and not shown ‘reasonable caution’ by failing to warn about the adverse health effects of Roundup on the product packaging.
Roundup consists of the chemical substance glyfosat and are absorbed through the leaves and shoots. It is a widely used weed killer – also in Denmark where the environmental protection Agency estimates that the Danish consumption in 2015 was on the 853 tonne.
the Product was originally patented by the us chemical company Monsanto, which in 2018 was acquired by Bayer.
The kræftsyge pensioner, 70-year-old Edwin Hardeman, suffering from an aggressive form of lymphoma, and he now has the court’s words, many years of exposure to the herbicide has played a role – and that Bayer is responsible for the lack of warnings about the harmful effects.
– Their actions clearly show that they do not care about whether Roundup can cause cancer. Instead, they have manipulated popular opinion and undermined anyone who has put forward the real and legitimate concerns about the product’s effects, says the Hardemans lawyers, in a statement after the verdict.
Bayer is facing a host of similar actions in the UNITED states, and in 2018, the company was ordered to pay compensation to a skolepedel, who had also developed lymphoma.
According to the news agency Reuters is nothing less than 11.200 action is currently underway in the american legal system.
Bayer has expressed disappointment with the verdict and intend to appeal.
– This judgment does not change in the four decades of weighty and extensive research, have concluded that our glyfosatbaserede herbicides are not carcinogenic, says the company in a statement.
The many lawsuits and the prospect that more of them can result in millionerstatninger, has been Bayer’s stock price to fall dramatically.
