The Protestant theologian Margot Käßmann urges a sense of proportion at school enrollment ceremonies. “Yes, starting school is a special step. But ostentation and pompous festivals don’t have to be,” writes the former chairwoman of the council of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) in her column in the “Bild am Sonntag”.
The former Hanoverian state bishop warned against destroying “equal cooperation from the start”: “Anyone who cannot keep up becomes an outsider before the first lesson has started.”
“Children are also happy about a homemade cake and don’t need any status symbols,” writes the 64-year-old and advises: “So, dear parents, go down and have a relaxing, nice day with the offspring.”
