Lawyers for Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman, has asked the court in New York, USA, on a new trial for the mexican drug lord, who among other things is known to be guilty of drug smuggling, conspiracy and money laundering.
the Reason is according to the lawyers, to members of the jury during the trial violated a prohibition to follow the case in the media.
the Lawyers have asked judge Brian Cogan to hold a consultation in the wake of an article in Vice News, who claims that at least five members of the panel followed the case in the press and on social media.
It meant that Guzman had not received a fair trial, the argument goes.
– We look forward to a new trial with a jury that lives up to its responsibility, says the defense attorney Eduardo Balarezo to the Associated Press.
the Prosecution has not commented on the matter.
Guzman was after a lengthy trial in New York pleaded guilty in to stand in the forefront of a global narkoimperium. Sentencing will take place 25. June, and it is expected that he will be sentenced to life in prison.
the Trial lasted for three months, and more than 50 people have testified in the case, where it has been revealed how Sinaloa cartel earned billions of dollars to smuggle tons of cocaine, heroin, amphetamines and marijuana to the UNITED states.
‘El Chapo’ is one of the central figures in the mexican narkokrig that has ravaged the country since 2006.
In 2017, he was extradited to the UNITED states after being arrested in Mexico.
