Nevele By a fire in a classroom could the lessons of a few classes of the Sint-Gerolfschool in Merendree Thursday not continue. Around 7.30 am in the morning, before the students in the class, took a burning candle supposedly for the fire.
The fire originated in a classroom on the first floor, where the lower school is taught. There would, according to the police, a candle not well put out, after which a table is on fire. All of the students already at the school were, had to go to the playground and the fire zone in Flanders was called to the location, but in the meantime, there was a great smoke. “When the firefighters in the classroom, the fire is already almost naturally assume,” police chief Marc Van Wabeke. “So there is not much fire damage, but a lot of rookschade.”
Strong professional
That agrees also head teacher Petra Van Vooren. “Fortunately the damage is limited to that one class, but there is quite a lot of damage by the smoke,” she says. “The walls are black and a lot of material and stuff of the students are damaged. Everything that was in the cupboards was, has a black edge to it.”
