American warships permanently based in the Danish ports can very soon become a reality if a proposal by the think tank Atlantic Council is led out in life.
In a new report describes the now-retired us general Philip Breedlove, who is the former commander-in-chief of the allied NATO forces in Europe, as well as the us diplomat Alexander Vershbow, who from 2012 to 2016 was deputy secretary general of NATO, how Russia is relatively easy will be able to overcome seconded to NATO forces in Poland and the baltic countries, and then to settle on the new lands, before military reinforcements from, among others, the UNITED states will be able to reach.
‘The northern part of Central europe has been the focal point for a confrontation between the West and a revisionist Russia. Under president Putin, Russia has been determined to roll back the agreement in the aftermath of The Cold War – to thwart the us-led efforts to build a unified, free and peaceful Europe and to undermine the rules-based order that has guaranteed security in Europe since the Second world War,’ is in the report’s introduction.
As examples of Russia’s attempts to shake the stability in the region mentioned ‘Moscow’s invasion and the continued occupation of Georgian and Ukrainian territories, the military buildup in Russia’s western military district and Kaliningrad, as well as the ‘hybrid’ warfare against western societies’.

today, americans have 4400 soldiers stationed in Poland, while in each of the baltic countries, the 1200 soldiers of the various NATO countries. In this context, Denmark has sent 200 soldiers to Estonia.
the Idea is to show that Russia in the event of an invasion not only must fight against the local forces, but also against the rest of the NATO countries ‘ forces.
But it is not enough, says the report.
For the troops lacking in a comprehensive and coordinated plan for the fight, should it come so far. There is a lack of intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, air defence and artillery that can hit the enemy at long distance.
‘A targeted Russian conventional attack, especially if it is done with short notice, be able to defeat these transferees, NATO and us forces in a relatively short time, before reinforcements can come to the rescue,’ says the report.
Atlantic Councils ‘ recommendation is, therefore, among other things, that the u.s. fleet in the Danish ports on consistent basis should deploy so-called destroyers, which is hurtigtsejlende warships armed with missiles, guns and torpedoes. The destroyers must, as on routine patrols in the Baltic sea in order to show their presence to the russians.
How many destroyers and which ports we are talking about, is not mentioned in the report, there is a preliminary version, where the main conclusions drawn above, while the final and more detailed report is published in 2019.
Close to the US send aircraft carrier to the Arctic: the So game is it
the Idea of american warships in Danish ports will, however, not greeted with open arms in the ruling party, the Left.
– There is no doubt that the world has shifted, and it will, of course, we also have to take into account. But to have real posted destroyers in waters like the Baltic sea is perhaps over the top. Who have Atlantic Council may have just been fresh enough, says Peter Juel-Jensen, who is the defense for the Left.
– We are not the same place today as yesterday. But when the world moves, we must make sure that we move us in the right way. Of course we must use military deterrence, as the Atlantic Council puts up, but we must also make sure that the care of the dialogue. The two things, we see the like from the Danish side, goes hand-in-hand, he adds.

in addition to the warships in Danish ports, recommend the Atlantic Council in the report a less american flådebidrag in the Polish port of Gdynia.
the Report recommends in addition, among much else, that the UNITED states upgrade its existing presence in the Polish city of Poznan for a division headquarters that will serve as the key point, if european and us forces to be deployed quickly in the event of a crisis.
at the same time, americans should expand the runway at Powidz, build more railway infrastructure for the reception of military equipment, build a base, which from 2023 can form the framework for a brigade, as well as the establishment of a new fuel and ammunition depots.
And the us air force should deploy more fighter aircraft in Poland than in the day and at the same time, make the presence at the Miroslawiec Air Base, from which the americans began to fly the MQ-9 Reaper drones in may.
Such a military buildup is, of course, not free, but Poland has in the past offered to pay two billion dollars – that is, about 13 billion crowns for a more permanent american presence in the country. In the same way could, it is said in the report, the baltic countries to pay for the increased military presence.
