Earlier in the day, several Russian media and news agencies, citing unnamed sources, claimed that Ravil Maganov had died at the Central Clinical Hospital in Moscow. Some of these sources claimed that he fell from a window.
An anonymous police source, quoted by the public news agency TASS, claimed that he had committed suicide by defending himself after being admitted to hospital for heart problems. This source clarified that he was taking antidepressants.
In March, Lukoil was one of the very few Russian companies to call for an end to the Russian offensive in Ukraine, which was followed by an avalanche of Western sanctions against large Russian groups and senior officials.
For the time being, the police have not given official information on the tragedy.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declined to comment on Thursday and said the issue was “not at all” about the Russian presidency.
Ravil Maganov, born in 1954, was one of the historical leaders of the group, founded in November 1991. According to Loukoil, he had imagined and proposed the name of the company.
The leader “made an invaluable contribution, not only to the development of the Company, but to the entire Russian hydrocarbon sector”, Lukoil said in the press release announcing his death.
At the end of April, the billionaire Vaguit Alekperov, then president of the group, had resigned a week after being placed on the list of Russian personalities sanctioned by the United Kingdom.
