Eeklo The College at Doorn in Eeklo has in the archive a directory is found containing fourteen unopened oorlogsbrieven, who in 1944 by German soldiers were written. The people of The Erfgoedhuis go now, looking for still-living relatives of these soldiers. The archives of the College at Thorn was years of hiding in boxes, but finally get a second life.
The past months was the rich archives of the College at Doorn in Eeklo enumerated. The archivists clashed on a mysterious packet of unopened letters. “We have those letters very carefully opened, and it turned out to be old oorlogsbrieven that were written by soldiers who at the end of the Second world War, in the buildings of the College at Thorn stayed,” says An Vandenberghe of The Erfgoedhuis. “The letters date back to all of 31 August and 1 september 1944. Not by chance, because on 2 september 1944 the Germans here, hurry to leave. So, letters that she’d already written to the home front, but never on the post were done. In the letters we read also that the German soldiers really had the feeling that the war is at its end. The are certainly historical gems.”
